Where to SUP in South Africa?

This article covers our top 5 places to SUP in South Africa.

One of the many great aspects of SUP is the ability to travel the world and still discover new and interesting locations to paddleboard.

In our articles, we have covered ground from around North America, spots in Central America, Asia, Europe, and now we wish to focus on the wonderful locales in Africa with a starting point in South Africa.

In case you are unfamiliar with the watersports world and don’t know, the country of South Africa is one of the most famous places for waves, downwinders, and water-based exploration.

It’s also known for its sharks in the ocean, but shhh, don’t tell anyone.

Because the chances of a shark attack are very, very, very, very low. So don’t worry!

Especially if you are heading that way and want to spend time on a SUP...

Because these are five great places to get on the water while in South Africa. Let’s go!

SUP Cape Town (Cape Town)

The first stop on our list for SUP in South Africa is SUP Cape Town, located in well, you know…

Cape Town!

This outfitter is loaded with some of the best equipment on the market, from Red Paddle Co. to Naish and a few big brands in between.

When you head to SUP Cape Town you’re guaranteed to get on one of the best boards available.

And it’s convenient! With a waterfront property, they are able to rent boards right out of their shop at a great price and a convenient walk to the water.

They also offer paddlers a great SUP demo feature. If you decide that you don’t like the rental boards they have available and you are in the market for a purchase, book a demo! That way you can test it before you buy.

Not a bad deal!

For a great place to SUP in Capetown with the excellent bonus of being able to demo some of the best boards on the market, head here!

Xpression on the Beach (Capetown and Durban)

One of the best places to have fun with SUP in South Africa is at Xpression on the Beach.

Even with two locations, the team at Xpression makes sure their customers are happy and enjoying their time under the sun.

When visiting the outfitter, patrons have the chance to meet multiple Springbok water-sportsman, Gary van Rooyen and SUP World Champion, Tarryn King.

Activities offered here include surf and SUP lessons as well as rentals.

If you are an experienced surfer or SUPer, skip the wait when it comes to a lesson and get onto the water at your pace!

For beginners, sign up for a lesson with their world-class staff and have an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of SUP before heading out!

This includes the proper paddle stroke, where to stand on the board, and of course, how to stand in the first place.

It’s all covered here at Xpression on the Beach.

SUP Fitness (Randburg)

Our next stop for SUP in South Africa takes us to Randburg at a place called SUP Fitness.

With a name like that visitors can expect to receive fitness training on a SUP. This can include on-land exercises mixed with water-based fun, or it can include just time on the water. The choice is ultimately yours.

Beyond that, however, you can rent, take a beginner lesson, and also have a SUP party!

This entails a group experience on the water with your party’s own instructor, access to a changing room, and a gazebo for a private gathering after the fun is over on the water.

We may be a bit biased here, but we can’t think of a better way to spend a birthday party.

For all of your SUP needs and fantasies (the birthday party is a fantasy of ours) be sure to give SUP Fitness a shout!

SUP in South Africa

Surf Emporium (Capetown)

The next spot on our list for SUP in South Africa is Surf Emporium in Capetown.

When you think of Surf Emporium, think of SUP! That doesn’t quite sound right, does it? Trust us.

While they do offer fantastic service when it comes to surfing in Capetown, they also have plenty of options for SUP available to those hardcore paddlers out there.

If you are new, Surf Emporium has one of the best schools for SUP in the area. They explain on their site, “We are South Africa's leading accredited SUP School with a proven track record. We specialise in both flat water and ocean SUP training. Muizenberg is regarded as one of the best SUP beaches in the world with long lines of waves rolling in on a regular basis and with no strong currents. We are also situated a few minute's drive from Zandvlei estuary for beginner flatwater lessons.”

It’s the best of both worlds!

Learn to SUP or learn to SUP surf. Either way, it’s a blast!

SUPSA

SUPSA is an organization located in South Africa that is a bit different from the rest of the outfitters on our list.

Think of SUPSA as a database for everything SUP in South Africa. They’re a great resource for paddlers outside of the country to check out and that is why we felt it necessary to include it on our list.

They first formed a few years back to help regulate the sport in South Africa. As they grew, so did their outreach.

And now they are a bonafide resource for paddlers in all of South Africa. And we wanted to mention them here in case you were in the country and needed an additional resource to reach out to.

Enjoy!
