SUP lessons for those who like a challenge
Once you’re comfortable enough paddle boarding you most likely are infected by the paddle bug. That is the moment when you’re ready to take your paddling to the next level. Paddle boarding has different directions that you can take. You can learn how to river sup, racing and prone paddling to name a few. And yes, you are able to learn these types of even here in landlocked Alberta. Not surprisingly that with our many rivers paddlers are drawn to river sup which is pretty spectacular not only to watch but also to practise yourself.
Paddleaway.today offers river sup as one of our courses for which we teamed up with Neil Gilson, one of Canada’s top instructors. Neil is the founder of Bearfoot Performance Paddling. With a career of over 30+ years Neil has worked not only as a whitewater canoe, rafting and ocean kayak guide but also more recently as a certified Paddle Canada Flatwater and River SUP instructor throughout western Canada. He brings a wealth of paddling experience that not a lot of instructors can claim.
Neil is an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer and holds University degrees in Environmental Design, Outdoor Recreation and Geography. When on dry land he can often be found int he Rocky Mountains skiing, hiking or mountaineering.
Which course is for you?
The River 101 course
Location: the Bow River in Canmore, AB.
You will learn the River SUP fundamentals. This includes advanced flatwater skills such as running turns, acceleration techniques, bracing, off-side stroke, and moving around on your board. We will also get you familiarized with specialized skills such as running small standing waves, ferries and eddy turns.

Location: the Kananaskis River, AB.
It is a full day course which is teaching you not only the fundamental skills necessary but also introducing you to advanced skills like wave running, eddy hopping, S-turns, jet ferries, and surfing standing waves!
