Meet Meghan of Mountain Surf Paddle Sports in Fayetteville, West Virginia
Hi Meghan, could you tell us a little more about yourself ?
Hi I'm Meghan, I'm passionate about the outdoors and have made it my career for the past 14 years. I stared out traveling and working seasonally in several different guiding positions around the world before settling down in the New River Gorge in WV to start my own SUP business. We focus on professional instruction and quality rentals. We also want to make SUP more accessible to the local community and volunteer often with Active Southern West Virginia giving free SUP demos and activities. On the off season I lead SUP trips for Quark Expeditions in Antarctica!

Location Overview - Tell us about your water environment
The New River Gorge in West Virginia offers many beautiful paddle spots. Summersville lake is a unique lake with towering 80ft cliff walls surrounding the lake allowing you to climb and fall off into the water! Also some beautiful waterfalls to visit and paddle under. The New River had a nice class I-II 2 mile stretch of river that is not only scenic but exciting and a great spot to teach the basic skills of whitewater SUP and paddling in current. Kanawha Fall allows SUP paddlers to explore at the base of beautiful waterfalls. A great spot for swimming, picnicking and paddling!
What services do you offer, do you have a signature paddle tour or activity?
We do lessons, workouts, sunrise & sunset paddles, tours, SUP yoga, and whitewater SUP clinics.
The iconic trip is to Summersville Lake where we explore the cliff line, and do some rock scrambling and jumping (below 6 ft high only). We then go to the waterfall where we can paddle under it! The trip I find really exciting and so different from other sup trips is the New River whitewater clinic! Learn about paddling in current, practice your skills, and then head down stream through some small rapids! This trip is great for beginner and more advanced SUP paddlers alike!
Can you tell us some interesting notes about the area?
Beautiful cliffs and waterfalls on Summersville Lake. Huge waterfalls at Kanawha Falls. The New River Gorge is lush in History, wildlife, and views. Eagles can be spotted soaring above the river; Thurmond, an old pal mining town is now part of the National Park and has a great museum to explore and is right at the take out of the river!
Are you seasonal or do you operate year round?
May - October
Tell us about your favorite local food and why you love it
Fayetteville Wav has so many great local spots! Secret Sandwich Society, Pies and Pints and The South Side Junction!
Where would you recommend travelers stay nearby?
There is an endless amount of cabins and air B&B's in the area. I like Opossum Creek Cabins a lot, they are nice, in the woods, but not far from town.
Are there any additional activities nearby that you recommend?
Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking and Whitewater Rafting. This area is an outdoors persons dream!
