Hi Sergiu, could you tell us a little bit about yourself before paddling:
I am a retired Military officer. I currently own a couple of cafés. That is where my main source of money
comes from at the moment.
But on a trip to Switzerland, I saw a couple of people standing on boards and paddling. I was curious
about what they were doing so I asked them what it was. They explained it was a standup paddleboard.
They were using Fanatic boards.
Luckily, they let me try it out for myself. It was a really fun time. So, naturally, I had to find out where I
could buy one for myself. I came across an inflatable board company called Red Paddle Co. They supply
my boards now.
But once I got back to Moldova, I started to look for other places, other businesses, that were doing SUP
lessons and didn’t find any. Because of this, I decided to start my own business in 2017, and I named it
My business has just basically started. I am trying to provide this sport by using the internet, Instagram,
and other tools to make it grow.
Tell us a little more about your experience with paddle boarding:
I have been on a few expeditions during the summer and plan to do a few more in the coming years. I
have paddled in the Black Sea. I went on a 20km (12 mile) trip through Greece. During the summer I
paddle mostly at our rental location.
I also have started a Dragon Boat Club. It involves those big paddling ships from China. We have a
collection of four, five, or six guys and girls paddle the big ship. We do races on them and hope to be in
the Dragon Championship.
It’s just an extra way of getting people involved in the sport. It’s a ton of fun.
And then I am trying to do a trip with another instructor who will act as a guide- we are going to try to
paddle 300-400 km (186-250 miles) from one side of the border to Dnister, Ukraine, down to the Black
Sea. But we will need to do some fundraising for that.
What are some of your favorite places to paddle?
I’ve been a few places, but I really enjoy paddling in Moldova. The lake we are on is very nice. And if the
weather is good, it is a really relaxing paddle.
Location Overview- tell us about your water environment
We currently rent and paddle on a big lake called Valea Morilor. But there are 3 or 4 other big ones in
the area where we can paddle on as well surrounded by natural fauna and animals.
It is a flat water, calm, popular area where a lot of people go to walk, jog, hang out. Paddlers are
surrounded by people and by nature. It is really a great place to get on the water. And perfect for
anyone who is still a beginner.
Do you have any signature services or paddle activities?
We are just starting, it is a brand-new activity for the area, so our signature right now is just rentals but
we also offer a pickup service. If customers give us notice, I have a can that can fit 6 people inside, as
well as boards, and we can travel outside the city to paddle where everything is green and beautiful.
What is your season?
We start in April and go to September to mid-October but if you have a dry-suit or a wetsuit we can
paddle all year-round.
Are there any local attractions paddlers may also be interested in?
Oh, there are a few. We have delicious local food, historical places to visit, museums, and we are only
about 40 km from the capital city of Chisinau.
For paddling, there is the River Raut pretty close. It’s a wonderful spot, in a valley between two beautiful
mountains. I would suggest making your way there if you have the chance.
And the city of Orhei is close as well. It’s an old city, with amazing views. It’s best to take a look at
Google or TripAdvisor to see pictures. I think most people will like visiting it.
Are there any other cool or interesting activities in the area?
Yes, there is Transnistria- they separated from our country in 1992. They are interesting because they’ve
remained the same as they did when they were a part of the USSR. The infrastructure is good, but the
buildings, some of the cars, and other Soviet historical landmarks are still there. Many people visit it just
to see what it was like and what it is like now.
And of course we have many good wineries. Vinaria Criova is a good one, Vinaria Milestii Mici is another
one, Purcari Winery and Vinaria Cricova.
Do you have any recommendations for local food and drinks?
People need to eat our traditional food, it’s delicious. Please, not McDonald’s or KFC. I would
recommend Popsaul Dacilor or La Placinte.
Local places to stay?
There are a few places to stay in Chisinau. The Chisinau Hotel is good, the Nobil Luxury Boutique is a
little more expensive, but taking a quick look on TripAdvisor will give you the best options.
