Hi KJ, could you tell us what are some of your favorite places to paddle?
My favorite spot, which happens to be local, is at Assateague Island. The feeling you get when you cross the bridge and head onto the beach is unreal. Sometimes you can spot some wild ponies on the road before you get there and that just adds to the magic. But outside of that, I really enjoyed paddling in Cabo San Lucas, Baja Peninsula Mexico, the Chesapeake Bay, and the South River in Annapolis, Maryland. In Virginia there are great spots in the Pohick Bay Region and Fountainhead Regional Parks. Oh and Lake Tahoe is another magical spot. And of course, the semi-local Pocomoke River in Snow Hill is a fun, winding river to slowly paddle along. There are just so many great places.
Location Overview- tell us about your water environment:
We are in West Ocean City, close to Assateague Island National and State Park Seashore. It’s an island sitting off of Ocean City that is approximately 37 miles long. It’s open year-round and is just an excellent location for experience the beach, bay, dunes, forests and tremendous wildlife.I already mentioned it but there are herds of wild horses that live on the island. They just roam around, sometimes in the bay, sometimes on the beach, and other times they will be walking right down the middle of the road. It’s all part of the fun.
But the water itself is beach and bay. There are plenty of shallow parts of the bay for beginners to get fun rides in, and sometimes you can spot some stingrays in the water which is cool. And of course, across the way is the ocean, which has brought plenty of fun times surfing. Most of the time it is an easy break for beginners and the bottom is sand so there is no worries about hitting something sharp or hard on the bottom. It’s a great place to learn how to surf and SUP surf if that’s what you are looking to do.
Do you have any signature services or paddle activities?
We offer rentals, lessons, and we have a brick and mortar shop full of all kinds of SUP boards and accessories. But I would say our main signature service would be our Assateague Island Excursions where you might have a chance of spotting the ponies, or SUP yoga, both restorative and power yoga. What is your season?
We are open April through October with a busy season starting Memorial Day and going through Labor Day Weekend. But luck for us, and other visitors, Assateague is open year-round and that is always worth a trip. Are there any local attractions paddlers may also be interested in?
I would say the OSV portion of Assateague is worth a stop. If you have the right vehicle you can take it onto the sand and park on the beach, watch the sunset, build a bonfire, it’s a great time. You can also paddle the Assawoman Bay, there’s the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge south in Virginia, and you can paddle the Pocomoke River in Snow Hill which is the deepest, 45 feet and longest, 73 miles in the United States. Are there any other cool or interesting activities in the area?
Oh there are a ton. It’s a vacation town so we have all kinds of activities. There’s parasailing, jet skiing, there’s the Ocean City Boardwalk to grab Thrasher’s Fries, there’s the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum on the boardwalk, Trimper’s Carousel, Frontier Town which has a mini waterpark, and of course there are a ton of chartered fishing trips to choose from and the White Marlin Open is a huge draw for the town too. Plenty to do!Do you have any recommendations for local food and drinks?
There are a few great places in town. Bradda Barney’s is a local place, really close to our shop that has a Hawaiian-fusion feel to it. The Shark is a local favorite. They have great fish items on the menu and all of the fish is locally caught from the docks right outside. There’s the most famous restaurant in Ocean City which is Seacrets. Go there if you want a night on the town. And close by the small town of Berlin has a few cool spots to check out as well.Local places to stay?
It ranges. Of course there are plenty of hotels to choose from in town. The Hilton is probably the nicest. But there are also a few Airbnb places to choose from and Frontier Town is a campground as well so if you have an RV or tent, that’s the place to check out.Buddy Deal:
