Hi Joe, tell us a little bit about Long Island SUP.
I currently have 7 locations. I started in 2004 so I was one of the first, if not the first shop and outfitter
on the East Coast. But definitely the first in New York.
I have a brick and mortar shop as well as a few rental locations where people can drop our boards in the
water and go.
But it all started a few years ago though. I have family members who live in Florida and they told me to
look into SUP. They say- watersports start in Florida.
At this time, I owned 2 gyms, but they always took a hit during the summer. Nobody wants to be inside
when the weather is nice out. So, I looked into buying a few boards and started taking people out on the
water as part of my offerings at the gyms.
Eventually, I realized, starting a SUP company would be a better way to make money than owning the
gyms so I sold them both.
I was always a water-rat anyway. I loved being on the water.
But since I was one of the first people to start a SUP business on Long Island, it grew pretty quickly. We
expanded to locations in South Hampton, Fire Island, South Shore and others.
We now offer certification for paddling, personal training, beach bootcamp, SUP yoga, SUP fitness,
sunset and sunrise paddles, paddle board fishing and one of my favorite things- Shots at Sunset, where
we have a tiki bar at Sunset Harbor and just like they do in Key West, we paddle, then come back to the
bar and take shots when the sun is setting.
We also have options for surfing, kayaking, parasailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing,
kiteboarding, tubing off a boat, basically anything that involves watersports, we can do that for you.Tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience with paddleboarding:
I like to paddle as much as I can. I just like being on the water. I paddle flatwater, I surf, I pretty much do
it all. But as far as races go, I’ve done the one around Manhattan, I’ve paddled across the Sount in
Connectict, I’ve done the Carolina CUP, and around Fire Island as well.
I may not be terribly quick but I can pretty much paddle forever.Location Overview - Tell us about your water environment
I have the best of both worlds when it comes to my location. My major spot is in Sunset Harbor. It’s my
flagship location. That’s where I have the brick and mortar shop where I sell accessories, boards, and
more. Whatever you need to get on the water, we have it.
But the paddling spot at that location is a dedicated river, it’s flatwater paddling, very calm. And it feeds
into the great South Bay so it can be pretty wide open.
When it comes to the Fire Island location, we can get to the ocean, we have waves, we have SUP surfing,
we have the challenges that comes along with the open area.Regarding beginner lessons on the rivers though, the water is only about 5 or 6 feet deep. It’s perfect for
beginners. I always tell people that if they fall off, they can stand right back up, so it usually calms their
nerves down a bit.
Like I said, we have it all. Flat, calm water with minimal boat traffic, flatwater with some boat traffic, we
have the bay, and we have the ocean. Whatever you are looking to do on a SUP, we can accommodate
you.
As a little bonus though, at our Sunset Harbor spot, we have all the bells and whistles for our customers-
showers at the yacht club, pool, bathrooms to use on premises. It’s a great spot.Services Offered at Long Island SUP:
We offer anything and everything for our guests. We are usually open 7 days a week. We have special
tours, SUP surf lessons, SUP yoga, the sunset and sunrise tours, certifications, whatever it is you’d like to
do, we can do it.
We also offer off premise trips, camps for girl scouts and boy scouts, Sweet 16 parties, bachelor and
bachelorette parties. Just as an example, on August 6 th we have 120 kids signed up for a paddling camp.
We will take them out on SUP boards, kayaking, and canoeing where they can have fun on the water.
And we also give them a few water guns to play with once back on shore. It’s a great time. Can you tell us some interesting notes about the area?
Well, its New York City. We are a 5 min train ride from Manhattan, or you can take an Uber here. Ferries
run to and from Fire Island.
In Patchogue there are over 50 restaurants on Main St. It’s a huge restaurant destination. There are
concert venues, Beacon Theater type vibes at many places.
We can also paddle to different restaurants on the river such at The Oar Steak and Seafood Grill, Dublin
Deck, Off-Key Tiki, and Harbor Crab.
There’s also a 4 th generation boatyard, the oldest in the country, called Weeks Boatyard that’s a pretty
cool place to visit and see.
Plus, with the shallow spots on the river we have minimal boat traffic and the water warms up earlier in
the season and stays warm longer than other spots. Which makes it great for paddling well into fall.Is Long Island SUP Seasonal or does it operate year-round?
If you have the equipment to paddle all year-round we will do it with you. But most people don’t own a
wetsuit or a dry-suit, so our normal season is from early April to about Columbus Day.Tell us about your favorite local food and why you love it:
Well like I mentioned earlier, taking a paddle down the river lined with restaurants is probably the best
option we have. You can paddle, eat and drink all along the way. The Oar Steak and Seafood Grill or the
Off-Key Tiki spots are probably my favorite, just for the drinks and the atmosphere.Where would you recommend travelers stay nearby?
There are a ton of places to stay in the area. The local Marriott or Hyatt hotels are probably some of the
best. And of course there are plenty of Airbnb locations to choose from. Are there any additional activities nearby that you recommend?
It’s New York City! The possibilities are probably endless. Obviously, a trip to Manhattan would be the
best place to go to get a full New York visit. Broadway, Times Square, Madison Square Garden, you
name it.Signature Services:
Our sunset paddle is probably our signature service. Only because the sunset is the prettiest on Long
Island. It’s the only place that I know of which has an unobstructed view for miles to the west. We can
see the whole thing.
Other than that we also offer mega floats, flamingo floats which hold 12-14 people, and floating
cabanas. We rent those to couples most of the time. We anchor up a cabana, rent two boards, provide
wine, and couples will use these cabanas as their home base. So, they can paddle around the bay, and
then head back to the cabana to relax and sip on some wine. It’s pretty popular.Buddy Deal:
