That Time We Saw a Sea Cow

The paddling season is inching closer...

So close, we can feel the warm sun on our faces, the wind in our hair, and the cold salty splash of the ocean (or cold freshwater splash of the lake or river if that's your flavor) on our faces.

And with it quickly approaching, it's time for another SUP-centric workout to get yourself in shape and ready to go!

But before we get there, we first want to share a (short) story from one of our Members about their time in Florida on a Wildlife Excursion!

...

"The sun was bright.

I could see through the mangroves to a clearing that housed a sunken fishing boat.

It sat halfway out of the water and was full of barnacles.

I wondered how long it had sat there. What happened to it. Why it ended up touching the sandy floor instead of floating above it.

On the clear ocean water, the ripples of the wind blew a slow current that we paddled against.

We made our way to a shaded part of the mangrove.

Underneath the surface, movement caught our eye.

A large, gray figure was slowly shifting through the seaweed.

It turned and I could see its entire body.

The manatee sat a foot below the surface.

Its sad, puppy dog face, looked up at me as I stood on the SUP.

'Look over there!' My friend shouted.

Two more manatees broke through the surface and we were now surrounded.

From that point on, our smiles never stopped.

I had the best time with friends on our vacation down south. We were looking for something different to do besides visiting the same bars and restaurants and being an avid paddler I suggested to my friends that we get on the water for a couple of hours. We were all very glad we found a way to connect with the beautiful waters in Florida.

With the first wildlife excursion under our belts as a group, we'll certainly be looking for other chances to go on another in different states!

...

That is a true story from one of our members! He and his friends had taken a winter vacation in the Florida Keys and they wanted to spend time doing something new.

As they thought about what to do they knew it had to involve the water.

After a quick search on Perfect Paddles, they were able to locate Sarasota Paddleboard Company and got in touch with the owner and paddling professional, Bob. He suggested they go on their Mangrove Tour and the rest is history.
